Advancing towards the Selders home visually transports you back to a more rustic western scene. The old wagon that sits in the landscape seems out of condition, but it is in relatively good shape. This imagery brings a sense of the old west, a simpler time, a time of migrating west, shoot-outs and the overall romantic theme of the grand old time. Directly to the right is an old mine shaft, or an illusion of an old mine shaft. These two landscaping props offer a sense of the old west intertwining with the new west. And right in the middle of the property is a modern-day home that has been designed and constructed with great detail and elegance.
Lee Selders, owner of Lee Selders Construction built this home from top to bottom. He has been doing this type of work for about 30 years. As a child, Lee Selders enjoyed working with his hands. One of the first projects he remembers doing was a building a rabbit cage for his pet rabbit. He continued on with various projects in his youth that consists of wooden tool boxes, re-upholstering furniture and whatever else he could think of.
Lee kind of fell into becoming a professional contractor by taking a governmental class offered in Idaho; it was an introductory course to carpentry. He was reunited with his hidden passion and gift for building. He learned to build through good old-fashioned hands-on experience and on the job training.
Before moving to Montana, Lee lived in Nevada, where he used his talents and skills to make a living. He was even asked to build sets for a western movie. Lee prides himself humbly with being the best at what he does so, with that being said, he researched the type of woodworking that transpired in those days and what materials they had at their disposal. He built cabinets, bed-bunks, tables, and buildings that all correlated with that time. This is a fond memory for Lee.
Lee and his family moved here 17 years ago. His wife, Roseanne, was born and raised in Montana, and wanted to come home. Roseanna is a true Montana girl who wanted to raise her family where she had been raised. They had six beautiful children and, of course, Lucky, their dog. Lucky is truly Lee’s best friend and partner. He goes just about everywhere with Lee. I would even suspect Lucky might even know a thing or two about building himself, or at least how to get out of the way! When Lee is not busy building dreams for other families in the community, he enjoys fishing and hunting.
Lee’s philosophy of doing business is to be honest and up-front with customers. He takes his business very seriously and wants to offer the best customer service. He is very organized and stays on track, not only for himself, but for his sub-contractors, and his clients also benefit and appreciate the attention to detail and schedule keeping. This helps alleviate problems and can even drive costs down. He also likes to meet with potential clients to discuss all the options and what kind of budget they have. This helps him be able to better serve them in the long run. He sticks by what he says and holds to the client’s budget . He also listens to his clients and can offer alternative and solutions for the client to get things they may want, while still staying on budget.
Currently, Lee is working on various houses, re-modeling projects, and even commercial buildings. He builds customized/individualized homes and specs homes that are not individualized. He can draw and design homes, but does not solely do that, as he also dabbles in landscaping as well. But he does not solely do that either. Lee is a visual learner, who is truly talented at what he does. He volunteers in the community regularly and has even traveled to Africa to build. Lee commented that “building a home should be a stress-free, exciting and fun time. I try to bring all this to the building project.”
